Overview
As the UX Designer for Chemical & Engineering News, I design and maintain the digital layout for one of the leading industry magazines in chemistry, reaching a subscriber base of over 90,000. C&EN is a publication of the American Chemical Society, and my role sits at the intersection of editorial design and web production — making sure that every story, feature, and data visualization looks right and works well across all devices.
What I Do
Digital Production
I spearhead digital production for major feature pieces like Global/US Top 50, Year in Pharma/Chemistry, and World Chemical Outlook. This involves creating dynamic web graphics, interactive visualizations, and digital elements for weekly cover articles and features — translating complex scientific data into clear, engaging visuals for our readership.
Visual Strategy & UX
I develop and implement innovative visual strategies for digital content, enhancing the user experience and increasing engagement among new target demographics. I review and approve all digital story layouts to ensure visual consistency and production quality across the site, maintaining the editorial standard C&EN's audience expects.
Editorial Collaboration
I collaborate with the editorial team to align digital content with the magazine's visual and editorial standards while leading the transition to a digital-first production process. I ensure web content is optimized for all devices and platforms, maintaining a high standard of accessibility throughout.
My work at C&EN draws on the UX research skills and web design foundations I've developed throughout my career. Read about my UX design approach, or see my web design process. You can also explore C&EN directly at cen.acs.org.
